Can I enclose a timber frame pavilion with screens or walls?
One of the most popular upgrades NORWEH customers make is enclosing their pavilion — fully or partially — to create a screened outdoor room that keeps insects out while maintaining the open-air feel.
Common enclosure options:
- Screen panels – removable or fixed fiberglass or aluminum screen panels fitted between posts; the most popular option for insect protection
- Outdoor curtain panels – a flexible, low-cost option that adds privacy and wind blocking; can be tied back when not needed
- Polycarbonate or glass panels – for a more enclosed, year-round-usable structure; significantly increases weather protection
- Partial cedar siding – lower knee wall sections with screen or open space above; adds architectural detail and partial wind protection
Things to consider when planning an enclosure:
- Adding fixed walls or screens may change your structure’s classification under local building codes — check with your municipality
- Ensure any enclosure system accounts for wood movement — timber expands and contracts seasonally and panels must accommodate this
- Work with a local supplier or contractor familiar with outdoor enclosure systems for best results
NORWEH’s timber frame posts and beams are perfectly proportioned for standard screen panel and enclosure systems.
