Do I need to seal or stain my NORWEH timber frame pavilion?
While Douglas Fir is a naturally durable and dense wood, applying a sealant or stain is strongly recommended for any timber frame structure installed outdoors. Without a protective finish, even the highest quality wood will eventually show UV graying, surface checking, and moisture absorption.
What happens without sealing:
- UV exposure causes the wood surface to silver-gray over 6–12 months — which some owners appreciate as a natural patina, while others prefer to prevent it
- Moisture cycling (wet and dry seasons) causes surface checking — small cracks along the grain that are cosmetic rather than structural, but can be minimized with proper sealing
- Untreated end grain (beam ends and rafter tails) is particularly vulnerable to moisture absorption and should be sealed as a priority
Recommended sealing approach:
- Apply your first coat of sealant or stain after the wood has had 2–4 weeks to dry and settle after delivery — fresh kiln-dried timber benefits from a brief acclimation period
- Apply before the first significant rain season in your area
- Use a penetrating oil-based exterior wood stain with UV inhibitors for best performance on Douglas Fir
- Apply to all exposed surfaces including end grain, post bases, and the underside of rafters
- Reapply every 2–3 years or when water no longer beads on the surface
