Why is my Douglas Fir timber turning gray and is this a problem?

What stain or finish does NORWEH use on its timber frame structures?

We specify CUTEK stain for all NORWEH timber frame kits. CUTEK is not a conventional surface stain – it is a penetrating oil system that works from within the wood fiber rather than sitting on top of it as a film.

CUTEK draws deep into the Douglas fir cell structure via capillary action, stabilizing the wood against the moisture movement that causes checking, splitting, and warping. The result is a structure that is protected from the inside out, with no surface film to peel, crack, or trap moisture beneath it.

For outdoor timber framing that lives through full seasonal cycles – heat, UV, rain, frost – this approach is significantly more durable than conventional film-forming stains or sealers.

Why CUTEK over conventional exterior stains?

Conventional film-forming finishes (paints, varnishes, some solid-body stains) create a surface barrier. Once that barrier cracks – and it will, as timber moves seasonally – moisture gets in but cannot easily get out. That trapped moisture accelerates decay.

CUTEK’s penetrating oil system moves with the wood. It does not crack because it has no surface film to crack. Moisture can still move through the timber, but the stabilizing oil reduces the severity of that movement and the surface damage it causes.
