How do I maintain and protect my timber frame pavilion?
Douglas Fir is a naturally durable and beautiful wood, but like all outdoor timber it benefits from regular care to maintain its appearance and maximize its lifespan. The good news: maintenance is straightforward and infrequent.
Annual maintenance checklist:
- Clean the timber surface – wash with a mild wood cleaner or diluted dish soap and a soft brush; rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely
- Inspect all hardware – check bolts, lag screws, and post base hardware for any signs of corrosion or loosening; tighten as needed
- Check the roof – inspect roofing material for any lifted panels, cracked shingles, or areas where water could penetrate
- Clear debris from roof and gutters – leaves and organic matter hold moisture against timber surfaces
- Inspect post bases – ensure posts are not in contact with standing water or soil
Every 2–3 years:
- Apply a quality UV-resistant wood sealant or stain – this is the single most important maintenance task; it protects against UV graying, moisture penetration, and surface checking
- Clean the surface thoroughly and allow to dry for 48–72 hours before applying any sealant or stain
- Use a product rated for exterior softwood timber — penetrating oil-based stains offer excellent protection and are easy to reapply
